For better or for worse, the Christian church has had a major influence on Western culture for more than two thousand years. That history has been marked with great accomplishment and compassion as well as terror and bloodshed. We can look to figures such as Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King, Jr. who made a difference in this world in the name of Jesus and scripture, while at the same time trying to reconcile the evils of church sanctioned killings as in the inquisition or blind tolerance of child molestation as in the not-so-distant events of the Catholic church. At the very least, the church is notable for the almost militant control it places on its followers and their ideas, as well as the propagation of gender and hierarchical inequalities, even in our current times. And yet, the church continues to grow, prosper, and be a real part of our everyday lives.
This workshop series is an attempt to come to grips with not only the practices and traditions of the Society of Metaphysics & Magic in a predominantly Christian paradigm, but also an attempt to heal the wounds that that same church has inflicted. The workshop will extend over three sessions and will include guided discussion and facilitated activities that we hope bring about an understanding of the role of the church in our individual lives, as well as a catharsis for those who have the potential scars from its traumas. The last session will focus on the use of healing and protection magick to start the process towards regaining the self.
This series is open to all who seek a safe space to acknowledge, explore, and ultimately heal from the traumas of the church in their own lives as well as try to understand and find forgiveness for those who struggle with the karmic debt that the church has built in the past. This workshop is perfect for those who have walked away from the church on theologically diverging grounds as well as those who’ve left the church because of trauma, those who have found it hard to connect with loved ones who are still blind to the church’s failures, and those who may not have been involved in the church in this lifetime, but feel they have the weight of the church from previous incarnations.
One unique element of this workshop series, however, is that we don’t ask, or expect, everyone to give up their devotion to Jesus or the God of their childhood. Like the divinity of other Gods and Goddesses that are worshiped in other traditions, the love and power of the message of the actual figure of Christ can be compelling and nurturing. Many of us believe that the fault was never that of the figure of God or of Christ, but of the manipulation of that figure by the heavy hand of “man” (both in societal and gender meaning) in pursuit of the ulterior motives of greed, control, and power.
